Pool Renovation & Resurfacing in East Hampton, NY
Resurfacing a pool in East Hampton runs about $4 per square foot in plaster, $5–10 in quartz and $10–20 in pebble, so $6,000–20,000+ per project (national 2026), with Long Island bluestone coping at $25–50 per linear foot, a salt conversion at $500–3,500 and an automatic cover at $15,000–25,000. We put East Hampton pool owners in touch with one licensed, insured pool company that renovates in the off-season, sequences coping and tile before the finish, and handles the drain-down properly.

A pool renovation in East Hampton is a five-figure job that has to happen in the right order, in the off-season, on a lot where the water table and the village rules have opinions. We put East Hampton pool owners in touch with one licensed, insured pool company that does renovations rather than only service, and we publish the 2026 ranges so the quote reads plainly.
Renovation in East Hampton: what's different here
Shingle-style village houses with pools tucked behind hedges, oceanfront estates south of the highway with 20×40 gunite pools, spas and pool houses, and mid-century and new-build houses in Springs and Northwest Woods with older vinyl and gunite pools on their second finish.
East Hampton has pools in the salt near the water and pools under trees inland, and the renovation choices split: corrosion-proof stone, hardware and heater on one side; a pebble finish that shrugs off leaf stains and a cover that keeps the trees out on the other. Either way, coping and tile go in before the finish, and the drain-down goes to a drywell.
In the historic parts of East Hampton, a visible change to the terrace or coping around the pool may need review before work starts; the company should raise it first.
The Town of East Hampton doubles side and rear setbacks for swimming pools, pool decks and pool equipment (§255-11-88), and the Village of East Hampton doubles its accessory-structure setback for pools, equipment and pool houses expressly for noise; a pool that fits the lot on paper may not fit the code. No structure, pools included, within 150 feet of a wetland in the Town, and a Natural Resources Special Permit cannot override the yard setbacks; around Georgica Pond the Town Trustees have jurisdiction as well.
Permits in East Hampton run through the Village of East Hampton Building Department inside the village; Town of East Hampton Building Department for Springs, Northwest Woods and the rest of the town; the pool specialist we put you in touch with handles the filing where one is required.

FAQ
Renovation questions
Should I convert my Hamptons pool to salt?
Probably, if you own the pool for the long run and fix the corrosion details. A conversion costs $500–3,500 (about $1,000 typical: a $600–2,000 generator plus $100–500 to install; no draining if the water is balanced). Ongoing chemicals drop to under $100 a year against $175–800 for chlorine, the water is softer, and there is no chlorine to store. The recurring cost is the cell: $200–1,800 depending on which of four sources you believe, every 3–6 years, roughly $200–360 a year. The catch is corrosion: copper heat exchangers, soft limestone or natural-cleft coping, and steel hardware near the water. On the South Fork that means a cupro-nickel heater exchanger and sealed bluestone or porcelain coping, and near the ocean the salt was already in the air anyway.
Gunite, vinyl or fiberglass: which pool for a Hamptons house?
Gunite is what the South Fork builds: any shape, a spa in the same shell, a 30–50+ year structure, and a finish that needs redoing every decade or two (plaster about 10 years, pebble 20+). On Long Island a standard gunite pool runs $90,000–140,000 and a custom one $100,000–400,000+. Vinyl is the budget route at $40,000–70,000, with a liner every 8–10 years at $5,000–7,500 and a 15–20+ year structure. Fiberglass is a factory shell at $45,000–85,000, a 20–30 year shell, the fastest install and the fewest shapes, and it needs a crane, which matters on a village lot. The vinyl and fiberglass Long Island figures come from a single source; treat them as a starting point.
Read the full answer →Do I need a fence around my Hamptons pool, and an alarm?
Yes to both, with one exception. New York requires a barrier at least 48 inches high around any residential pool, with no openings over 4 inches and gates that close and latch on their own, and since December 14, 2006 every pool built or substantially modified must have an approved pool alarm; where a house wall forms part of the barrier, the doors need alarms too. The exception: a pool with an automatic safety cover does not need the alarm. Villages add rules: Southampton Village allows pools only in rear or side yards behind a 4-foot fence with gaps under 4 inches; the Town and Village of East Hampton double the setbacks for pools and pool equipment; Sag Harbor reviews any fence visible from the street in the historic district. Every pool circuit needs GFCI protection and bonded metal parts, by a licensed electrician.
